Cows & Calves - July 2021
Prairie Valley Farm is located five miles west of Platte, South Dakota on Highway 44.  It is owned and operated by David Mason.

In 1980, the late Clarence Mason, David's father, began a Charolais herd. Now, David and hired men, have expanded his herd to include 200 spring cows and 100 fall cows.

David's niece, Courtney, joined as bookkeeper in 2014, and her husband, Lyndon DeVries, joined the family business in November of 2016.

Since 1989, Prairie Valley Farm has been selecting their top bull calves to sell at their annual bull sale in April.

They also feed some customers' cattle and finish their own calves. The grain enterprise of Prairie Valley Farm consists of growing corn, wheat, beans and hay.

The Mason family would like to THANK YOU for visiting our website. Please take some time to view the links at the top of the page and let us know if we can be of any help to you.

David Mason receives the South Central Cattlemen’s Association
“Producer of the Year” Award.
South Central Cattlemen's Producer of the Year
February 24th, 2018.
In 1989, David's father went to a small town in the corner of the state to purchase the top selling bull in hopes of having the best herd of cows in South Dakota. With help from his son, they selected and brought this man's dream to reality. His father taught him to be a master stockman, farmer, and cattle feeder.

Working on the farm his whole life, 40 years later, he is preparing for his 29th Annual Bull Sale where people come from near and far to purchase bulls with the best health, management, selection, and genetics to produce a quality product to meet the customers' needs.

His herd consists of 200 spring cows and 100 fall cows. The grain enterprise consists of growing corn, wheat, beans, and hay.  He now has four full-time employees that make the operation so successful.  In his down time, this cattleman enjoys attending the National Finals Rodeo in Las Vegas and the College World Series in Omaha.

Our long time customer Steve Stluka, and his wife Tabitha, received the “Charolais Commercial Producer of the Year” award at the Annual Banquet held in Watertown on February 9th, 2018. Way to go Steve! We are proud of your hard work and dedication to the Charolais industry.
South Dakota Charolais Commercial Producer of the Year 2018 Steven Stluka
Steven Stluka was born July 29th, 1975. Steve graduated high school in 1993 from Geddes, SD, and then went on to college at Western Dakota Tech in Rapid City. After college, Steve came back to farm with his Dad, John, better known as "Sonny". Steve later married Tabitha Coler, and together, they have four children - Hayden (17), Seth (14), Chloe (12), and Sutton (11), where they reside near Lake Andes and their children attend Platte-Geddes School District.

In the early 1980s, Steve's dad started using Charolais bulls and a passion began for Steve. At age fifteen, Steve started his own cattle herd. Steve's dad passed away in 2014 and by then, they had worked their way to 100% Charolais Bulls. Today, Steve has 145 Red Angus cows bred to Charolais. Steve uses Hubbard feed through the Geddes Farmers Elevator. Along with his cattle, he produces corn, wheat, and soybeans. Steve's children enjoy working along side their dad, Hayden is actively involved in running the equipment, and the younger children help with the smaller day-to-day tasks.

When Steven is not working with his cattle herd, he is watching his kids' sporting events, helping his neighbors, or ice fishing.

Thanks for visiting. Hope To See You Soon!
